When did you first realize that fashion has the power to transform not just how we look but how we feel about ourselves?
When I started styling, I noticed that when people wore clothes that suited them — when they’re in the right colors and silhouettes — that their physical confidence visibly grows. You can see that change happens. I get to watch my clients walk into any venue with a new level of confidence that only comes from knowing they are wearing something that truly suits them.
Your book “Change Your Clothes, Change Your Life Because You Can’t Go Naked” offers more than style tips—what are some key life lessons you hope readers take away?
The most important lesson is that your clothing should bring you joy and make you feel good. Every day, when you look in the mirror, you get to decide how you want to feel. Whether it’s for an interview, an important meeting, or a date, taking the time to present yourself to the world the way you want to be seen is a daily practice of self-care.
How do you help individuals reconnect with their authentic selves through their wardrobe, particularly when they feel out of touch with their identity?
I start by going through their wardrobe, figuring out what works and what doesn’t. Then I find a balance—pieces that push them slightly outside their comfort zone while also aligning with their goals. It’s about understanding where they’ve been and using clothing to take them where they want to go.
Can you share a story about how changing someone’s style had significantly impacted their life and self-perception?
One of my clients was a breast cancer survivor who had undergone a major physical and emotional transformation and was really looking to reinvent herself after treatment. We worked together to rebuild her wardrobe and incorporate new accessories, makeup, and hair styling into her routine. The transformation helped her reconnect with her beauty. She told me she had never felt more connected to herself. It wasn’t just about clothes — it was about helping her start a new chapter and present herself the way she wanted to be seen.
For those stuck in their style and life, what practical advice do you offer to help fashion become a tool for personal transformation?
Always look around for inspiration—whether from magazines, Pinterest, social media, or simply what people are wearing around you. Take note of what resonates with you and try to incorporate it in a way that feels comfortable for you. I like to say, “Take the best and leave the rest.” Take in the inspiration that you love, and leave what you don’t.
While fashion trends evolve, what enduring style principles do you believe genuinely help people express their best selves?
Always have classic pieces in your wardrobe, and mix them with trends that feel right for you. It’s about finding a balance between timeless and modern so your look always feels authentic but fresh.
From the insights shared in your book, “Change Your Clothes, Change Your Life Because You Can’t Go Naked,” which stands out as incredibly transformative for your readers?
When people see you, your clothing speaks before you do. Every day, we get the opportunity to wake up, look in the mirror, and ask ourselves, “What do I want to say today?” It’s important to make sure you’re presenting yourself in a way that aligns with how you want others to see you.
In what ways can fashion serve as a powerful form of self-expression, particularly for those seeking to live more purposefully and confidently?
Fashion becomes a powerful tool when you take it seriously. Make sure your clothes are flattering and appropriate for the situation, whether it’s a casual lunch with friends or a big presentation at work. Your clothes should always reflect the statement you want to make.
Amidst the demands of your career, what practices or sources of inspiration help you remain grounded and motivated?
I stay grounded by always seeking inspiration—whether from social media, Pinterest, fashion shows, or magazines. It’s a constant process of staying connected to what’s new and mixing it with the timeless elements of fashion. I find that it’s really easy to stay motivated when you’re helping people find confidence. Working on TV allows me to help many people at once, which is incredibly fulfilling.
What personal obstacles have you encountered, and how has your career in fashion contributed to overcoming these challenges?
My career has had its share of obstacles— between building a career on TV, hosting my web series, or writing my book, I’ve heard more ‘NOs’ than ‘YESs.’ But fashion has taught me persistence, and you learn to brush off the ‘NOs’ and keep moving forward to reach your goals. I like to think of it as being stopped at a red light—you know it’s going to turn green eventually. You just have to keep going until you reach your destination.
Who has had the most significant influence on your career, both in fashion and life A) and how has this shaped your approach to styling and personal development?
My mother! Growing up, she had her own clothing store, and she always inspired me to express myself and find the fun in fashion. Even today, I still run things by her for her opinions. She has a fabulous sense of style and continues to be a great influence on me.
How has working with significant fashion figures influenced your views on style and self-expression?
I started my career at Ralph Lauren and was exposed to a style that’s very classic and luxurious. That has always stayed with me, even in moments when I want to feel sexy or trendy and I love mixing modern, cool elements with classic pieces.
How do you maintain a connection to your authentic self in the whirlwind of the fashion industry?
I’ve always made it a point to express how I truly feel. Staying genuine is essential, and I believe people can sense true authenticity. I believe that you are the most creative when you’re connected to yourself and others. It’s also about balance and, making sure that you have friends, family, and fun in your life, and embracing the many dimensions of who you are.
What does “luxury for the soul” mean to you, and how do you incorporate that philosophy into the way you help others discover their style?
To me, “luxury for the soul” means being connected to your truest self. Once you understand who you are and what you’re trying to accomplish, your clothing becomes a valuable tool to help you get there.
In your journey through the fashion industry, what personal insights have you gained about self-worth, happiness, and living authentically?
You have to be connected to yourself — you’re a vessel and when you have blocks that you aren’t facing, they’ll keep you from having what you’re trying to reach in life. Have compassion and empathy — when you learn to have that for yourself, you can provide it for others.
